“Here, I’ll trade you, Angry Birds on my phone for that horse there you’ve got. I don’t think you’ll get a better deal than that,” Eli said, when he saw Jason leading Jack over to the mounting yard, giving the younger male a somewhat cheesy grin when he laughed at him, doing the clip back up on his helmet as he walked over when Jason stopped the young stallion, tossing him his phone which the groom pocketed so that he could give the much shorted jockey a leg up into the bay horse’s saddle.
Once he had sorted his reins and seat out, he angled the Thoroughbred towards the training track, keeping the horse on the turf track, since it had been discovered pretty early on that the horse couldn’t stand running out on the dirt. Which, was strange enough, considering how much he seemed to love rolling the stuff when he got out in the paddocks... he had kind of lost track of the amount of times their session had been late because Jason had had to spend time brushing all the dirt out of his coat so that he could be tacked up and worked. He had to wonder if he did it just because he enjoyed being bathed.
Jack seemed eager to get out onto the track, tossing his head and chomping at the bit when his hooves hit the grass, but Eli held him back, not letting him get his own way as he angled him towards the inside rail, letting him move into a rather lively trot once they had, although made sure he didn’t go too fast for now, letting him stretch out a bit before letting the horse move into a slow canter. Ash had only wanted the stallion breezed today, and a short one at that too, since the horse was a sprinter it wasn’t like he needed to know how to be able to keep going at particularly long distances. The only problem was that the horse would probably want to go faster than he was supposed to go, which would mean a lot of holding him back and a bit of frustration on both of their parts.
He kept the stallion at the same canter for another few furlongs, just to make sure that he was completely warmed up before starting on anything else, knowing that Ash would kill him if the horse strained a muscle or came off the track lame because he hadn’t warmed him up properly, because the last thing the small stable at Close needed was a lame horse, before he let him move into a moderately paced gallop. He could already feel the stallion trying to get his head off his rider, but he kept a very firm grip on the reins, not willing to let the horse get away with anything that he shouldn’t be doing. Jack wasn’t happy about it, but he listened to his rider anyway, although he did try to speed up the pace a bit a few more times during their gallop.
Once the whole distance they were supposed to be breezing for had passed, Eli counting the furlongs in his head as they passed each marker pole, he pulled the stallion up again with a bit of a fight, since the horse didn’t really seem to want to stop running, pulling him back down to a canter for another few furlongs and then down to a trot again for the rest of the way around the track, giving him plenty of time to thoroughly cool down, then back down to a walk for a short distance before they got back to the mounting yard, where Jason was waiting, leaning against the fence with Eli’s phone, probably having taken to his offer of Angry Birds while he had been out on the track.
“If you’ve beaten my high score, or else... well, I haven’t quite figured out what I’ll do to you yet, I’ll have to get back to you on that one.”
